David Titterington
He was brought up in Bolton and received early lessons in organ studies from Bill Morgan, a previous organist at Bolton Parish Church, and was taught piano by Michael Greenhalgh, BCU's Musical Director. He also had connections with Bolton Little Theatre and was Musical Director for the production of 'Sing a Rude Song' which was produced by Jean Hansen. He is an Honorary Fellow of Bolton Institute (now Bolton University). He was an Organ Scholar at Oxford University before continuing his organ studies in Paris with Marie-Claire Alain and Susan Landale at the Conservatoire de Reuil-Malmaison winning a Premier Prix a l'unanimité avec les félicitations du Jury. He made his recital debut at the Royal Festival Hall in 1986 and at the BBC Proms in 1990 with a BBC commissioned work Arched Forms with Bells by Diana Burrell. Since, he has performed in recitals and concertos at major festivals throughout the world, including the Bi-centennial Festival of Sydney, and the International Festivals of Hong Kong, Israel, New Zealand, Schleswig Holstein, Tokyo, Istanbul, City of London, Brighton, Cheltenham, Harrogate, Belfast, Guelph. In the BBC Proms 2000, he played in the UK premiere of Hans Werner Henze's 9th Symphony with the BBC Symphony Orchestra whilst in 2004 he performed in the 50th anniversary recital series at the Royal Festival Hall which included the premiere of Stephen Montague's Toccare Incandescentcommissioned by the South Bank Centre. In the BBC Proms 2009, he gave a solo recital of works by Elgar and Peter Dickinson. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with many composers across a wide range of styles including commissioned works, first performances and in recital with works by Mauricio Kagel, Diana Burrell, Lyell Cresswell, Peter Dickinson, Jonathan Dove, Paul Patterson, Giles Swayne, Per Nørgård. In 1998, he gave the New Zealand premiere of Olivier Messiaen's Livre du Saint Sacrement – "a performance of spellbinding authority...Titterington giving us a performance of staggering intensity and brilliance" . From 1984, he worked very closely with Petr Eben giving many first performances of his works worldwide. In 1987, Eben composed and dedicated his organ cycle Job to David Titterington. In performance, he has worked with many distinguished soloists and orchestras including Hakan Hardenberger, Christian Lindberg, John Wallace, Norman del Mar, Thomas Sanderling, City of London Sinfonia, Lahti Symphony Orchestra, Berlin Symphony Orchestra, La Camerata of Athens, BBC Symphony Orchestra, and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra. In recent years he has been awarded numerous honours including a Fellowship (honoris causa) of the Royal College of Organists, a Doctorate (honoris causa) and Honorary Professorship of the Liszt Ferenc State University of Budapest. In 2010, the University of Huddersfield conferred on him an Honorary Doctorate (HonDUniv). He is also an Honorary Member of the Royal Academy of Music, that institution's highest honour. Recent engagements include performances throughout Europe, Moscow (Tchaikovsky Hall), USA, Canada (Winspear Center, Edmonton), Beijing, Tokyo and South Korea. |

David is Artistic Director of the St Albans International Organ Festival, Head of Organ at the Royal Academy of Music, Organ Curator at St John's Smith Square and a Visiting Professor at the Liszt Academy, Budapest.
