The Nelson Mass according to Joseph Haydn’s biographer is arguably the composer’s “greatest single composition”. Haydn called his latest work the Missa in Angustiis or Mass for Troubled Times. It later became known as the Nelson Mass in honour of Admiral Nelson, who after defeating Napoleon Bonaparte in The Battle of the Nile became something of a "saviour of Europe".
